The preparation of journey to the holy city of Mecca took over 4 years. Thousands of peasants prepared all of his riches and belongings while many artisans form all across Mali prepared for his arrival. During his journey he often generously funded organizations and gave his riches away to the rulers of the places he passed trough as well as helping out the poor. Mansa gave away so much gold in short periods of time that he caused the city of Cairo in Egypt to decline its overall value. Cairo finally recovered from the instability over a decade later.

What did Mansa bring?
Mansa brought over 100 camels with over 300 pounds of gold on each camel. He brought lots of peasants that carried gold staffs with them. He also was accompanied by his wife and her 500 attendants, along with all of his subjects who wanted to travel with him.

What places did he travel through?
Mansa Musa first started his expedition in Nani, Mali. He then traveled Timbuktu, the largest city within Africa at the time. From Timbuktu he took on the Sahara Dessert (the largest hot dessert) which took months to cross. He finally came to the city of Cairo before traveling to Mecca.
